The most common question we get is simple: "What's it going to cost?" The honest answer is that it depends on your specific driveway — but here's exactly what goes into the number so you know what to expect.
The short version
Chip seal generally costs about half what asphalt paving costs for the same area. That's the main reason it's so popular for long rural and mountain driveways, where an asphalt quote can get eye-watering fast.
What actually drives the price
- Size (square footage). The biggest factor. Longer and wider drives use more binder and stone.
- Base condition. A solid, well-graded base goes faster. A soft, rutted, or overgrown base needs more prep before we can surface it.
- Grade and shape. Steep sections, sharp curves, and tight turnarounds take more care than a straight, flat run.
- Access. How easily our equipment can reach and maneuver on the site.
- Drainage. Culverts, ditches, and water management protect the surface and can affect prep.
- Number of coats. A single chip seal is standard; a double chip seal costs more but adds durability for heavier traffic.
Why we don't post an online price
You'll notice we don't have a "price calculator." That's on purpose. An online number is a guess that almost always changes once someone actually sees the job — and we'd rather not lowball you and walk it back later. Instead we come out, measure your driveway, check the grade and base, and give you an honest, accurate quote in person — for free.
Getting the most value
- Do the whole drive at once. Mobilizing equipment is a big part of any job, so larger areas are more cost-effective per square foot.
- Keep your base maintained. A decent gravel base going in means less prep cost.
- Plan for the right season. Warm, dry conditions help chip seal cure best.
